Costa Rica Hotels and Resorts, Northern Plains Region
During your trip from San Jose toward the Northern Plains, you will
enjoy the view of several mountain chains, such as Guanacaste and
Tilaran. They are separated by the Arenal's reservoir, loved worldwide
by windsurfers, and the small Cote lake that is shaped like a heart.
The charming plains of Guatuso, San Carlos and Sarapiqui extend from the
lands bordering Nicaragua to the northern low lands.
The Arenal Volcano
is among its main attractions. Its almost perfectly shaped cone presents
a spectacular show of red lava eruptions that remind you of carnival
fireworks contrasted against the dark night or dawn sky. Its neighbors
are the Tenorio and Chato Volcanoes.
The Tenorio is made up of four
volcanic cones and by two twin craters identified as the Montezuma
Volcano. Nowadays, the volcanic activity is found on the northwest side,
in the place known as Las Quemadas. One kilometer from there, you
can also find the site called La Casa, which together with the sites located
on the banks of the Roble River form
the "hervideros" or hot springs.
The Chato is a cone truncated by an explosive crater in the superior part,
which is now occupied by a blue green lagoon.
Along with the Arenal Volcano you can find the Arenal Reservoir.
It is an artificial lake perfect for water sports like windsurfing because its winds reach up to 72 km per hour.
To the north, the Guatuso area shelters the Celeste River lagoon and waterfall, a magical place unequaled in its
blue sky tonalities. In this paradisiacal place surrounded by beautiful groves, you can imagine the world in its
beginnings. It is very simple to get to this land of volcanoes, cloud and humid forests, waterfalls and places
where you can take long walks through the mountains without anything more than the
company of nature. Some roads are in good condition, although to visit
many of the main attractions it is better to travel by 4-wheel drive.
